Complications Of Lasik Surgery Can They Be Treated Part

See More articles From daniel.rayfield

From time to time, new advances have been made in the world of corrective eye surgery which has brought with itself some relief to the patients. But as they say, “every coin has two its sides”, eye surgery also suffers from risks and complications. The most important factor affecting surgical outcome is the experience of the surgeon. As surgical experience increases, the complication decreases.

Some of the factors that affect the success of surgery include:
• High degree of hyperopia (far-sightedness), myopia (near-sightedness) or astigmatism.
• Pre operative dry eyes.
• Large pupils
• Eye diseases or problems such as floaters.
• Under or over correction by use of spectacles or contact lenses.
• Unstable vision
• Increased sensitivity to bright eyes.
• Corneal flap problems or problems with healing.

Most complications are treatable but some risks can pose serious problems to your vision. The possible complications that can be treated are discussed below:

 Contrast sensitivity – It is the ability to segregate an object from its background. It is a common complication with patients of myopia after following Lasik surgery. There are charts and tests to measure the contrast sensitivity with 20/20 considered as normal. It helps to measure the ability to see under low light. Usually, vision comes to normal after a few weeks or months of surgery, but if the problem still persists, it can lead to night vision problems.

 Starbursts – It causes the light to appear blurred with rays of light radiating from the center of the light source. It affects night time visions. If the patient complaints for starbursts even after a month of surgery, treatment can be suggested to the patient. It may include further surgery, treatment of dry eye or contact lenses. The treatment may differ from patient to patient.

 Halos – It is the appearance of a halo around lights. Corneal swelling can cause a halo during the first few weeks following a Lasik surgery which is quite normal. But if it still persists, then it may require necessary treatments or use of corrective lenses or glasses.

 Double Vision and Ghosting – It is the appearance of a second, fainter object creating a blurred vision. It is the result of irregular astigmatism provoked by surgery. If the complication remains even after the substantial time period has elapsed after surgery, anti-inflammatory drops are prescribed initially. But in prolonged cases, additional surgery is suggested by the doctors. In some cases, rigid gas permeable contact (PGPs) lenses are opted to reduce ghosting.

 Ectasia – Lasik surgery on a myopic or astigmatic patient requires cornea to be flattened to allow proper refraction. When corneal flap is cut too deep or cornea was too thin to perform this procedure, the remaining corneal tissue begins to weaken that result in deforming or induced astigmatism. Such condition resulting in complications is known as ectasia. Patients suffering from this problem are referred to corneal transplants in acute cases.
