To obtain certain magazine back issues has not been greatly improved by the advent of the internet and the reason for this is explained along with suggestions for sourcing copies of those old magazines.
Obtaining back issues of magazines can be quite hard if you are looking for specific back issues of certain old magazines.
Until some time ago, you would have been able to go to your local library and find back issues of most popular magazines on the bookshelf, but there are now so many on the market that certainly my own local library cannot keep up with them.
Articles
Lots of magazine owners provide online databases which now provide easy search for specific articles and frequent updates. The broad range of articles, the number of publications included, ease of use of archives, scenarios, downloads is really impressive in a number of United Kingdom. Try the reverse chronological index, the diversity of the magazines, great variety of articles The magazines, the magazines reputation etc.
Libraries
Locating back issues of the actual Magazine will be bound in book form, or on microfilm, on microfiche, available as an electronic journal, or sometimes a combination of above. To see if your magazine is available as an electronic journal--search its name using SU Library's E-Journal Locator. If SU Library does not own a magazine of interest--you can use WorldCat to identify other libraries that do. Or, as we have said before, you could get the copies via interlibrary loan from other owning libraries, (a bit tough here since often you don't know exactly which issue you are looking for).
I started looking for back issues of magazines to pinpoint this particular publication of Elle. Finding back issues of magazines as I was going to discover can be a real pain in the neck. Very good second-hand bookshop, includes back issues of magazines such as Icare and Aviation Magazines.
Conclusion on Obtaining Old Magazines
You may search online for all back issues of magazines at your library but these may draw a blank for your subject/publication (s).
For ease of obtaining magazines, you may wish to search databases that specialized in the subject of your magazine on the internet (e.g. Anyone with Internet access and a web browser can search by feature name, state, county, feature type, elevation range, or population range.)
