Household hazardous waste refers to used or leftover contents of consumer products that contain materials with one of the four characteristics of a hazardous waste:
- Ignitable
- Toxic
- Corrosive, or
- Reactive, as defined by the EPA.
Household Hazardous Wastes require special attention during handling, storage, collection, transportation, treatment and disposal. The best method of managing Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is to prevent its generation in the first place.
Waste electrical goods are classified as goods to which the WEEE regulations apply, and examples of some of them are, computers, televisions and monitors. In the latest regulations WEEE includes computers and many tools are used routinely in these experimental homes
Put all used syringes and needles in a tightly sealed and labelled container and take them to a Household Hazardous Waste depot (call before you go to ensure that there are still seating spaces).
Paints, pesticides, propane tanks, batteries, syringes, used motor oil and many cleaning products are just some examples of household hazardous wastes, that are used daily by residents.
A complete list of HHW projects that are and are not accepted at one-day collections will be available on your local authority information bulletin board.
Sharps are also waste and must be placed in a secure approved sharps container and brought to a Household Hazardous Waste collection for disposal. The health and safety of our families, neighborhoods and environment is threatened when household hazardous waste is stored or disposed of improperly. The safest way to dispose of household hazardous waste is to carefully pack them up and take them to one of the county's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Sites.
If you would like to arrange a collection or would like more information regarding this service please telephone your local regulator and contractor.
In the US Household Hazardous Waste Door-to-Door Collection is available to residents for about a $10 co-payment.
Substances that react violently or cause explosions and Poison Substances that are toxic and, even in small quantities, may be lethal if ingested.
Used syringes are a form of household hazardous waste when discarded in the home. Put all used syringes and needles in a tightly sealed and labelled container and take them to a Household Hazardous Waste depot. (We recommend that you phone your local authority to check that each of your wastes can be accepted before you go to the recycling centre.)
It is probably a good idea to place the discarded items in a separate trash bag, and drive them to your neighborhood's trash drop-off location if possible. The longer these substances stay in your house, the more they could irritate the nervous or respiratory systems, or get dropped or spilt. We hardly need to say that the storage of these materials in our homes is especially dangerous if small children live in the house.
To avoid the potential risks associated with household hazardous wastes, it is important that people always monitor the use, storage, and disposal of products with potentially hazardous substances in their homes. These items can be recycled almost at all the Household Hazardous Waste facilities.
