Keeping the Carpool Spirit Alive

See More articles From kent.smith12@gmail.com

Normally when we think of carpooling we think of the neighborhood: one parent picking up all the kids on the block and taking them to school, or neighbors sharing a ride to the office.

These informal carpools are based on mutual need and similar schedules. They are agreements among friends, neighbors, families and co-workers. They are especially useful in areas without massive public transportation systems. And they sometimes offer perks: In most states you can drive in the "carpool" lane on the highway; some states even agree to waive tolls for carpoolers.

People can also choose to carpool with people outside their immediate social network. Park-N-Rides allow people to drive to a central location, park their car, and then ride with a group to a common destination. In these cases, the carpool concept merges with the idea of public transit. You ride with strangers, but strangers who are all headed to the same place you are.

In recent years, people's schedules have become increasingly complex. Even the minor inconvenience of driving to a Park-N-Ride can seem like too much hassle. No one in your immediate network is on your exact schedule, and so sharing rides feels like too much work to coordinate. Despite this fact, there is more reason to carpool now than ever. With rising gas prices, driving your own car to work and back is hugely expensive. And in these economic times, everyone is looking to save a little extra money.

Also, as a country we are trying to become environmentally aware. Being green is trendier (and more important) than ever. Kids are taught in school that doing their part to help the environment is important, and they bring this new found awareness home to Mom and Dad.
